protected characteristic

Terms from Artificial Intelligence: humans at the heart of algorithms

A protected characteristic is any aspect of a person, such as gender, age, ethnicity, disability, or social background, where for legal or ethical reasons we wish to avoid bias in data processing. They often represent distinctions where a group has historically been subject to discrimination, or in some way are vulnerable.
